Antartica

making sense

In Making Sense, two Australian artists – Debbie Symons and Jasmine Targett – explore Antarctica from two different perspectives asking the question: how does science and art change the way we view nature and environmental decline? Targett’s multi-coloured aerial maps of Antartica made stunningly of dichroic glass, itself used in constructing space helmets, reveals the fragility of protective systems both natural and man-made. Symons’ subject is species loss, mapped across the regions of Antarctica and revealed through opening a old chest of drawers, itself harking back to an older age of exploration. The exhibition is accompanied by a forum on data, art and visualisation.

Distracted

Distracted, a poetic interpretation of scientific ice core samples taken in Antarctica, is the work of Brisbane-based art, design, and media production collective Kuuki. An installation of acrylic tubes housing LEDs, resin bubbles, found organic matter and sensors, Distracted is an evocative and interactive experience, evoking ice, fluids and the notion of change. A number of data sets are used to create the abstract visualisation and sonification in the work, creating a unique context for understanding human presence and impact on the planet.
