Monometers

Monometers, by Michael Pinsky

Michael Pinsky transformed Belgium’s four largest wind turbines into an ecological monitor or meter displaying the energy and water consumption and noise and waste generation of a night-time festival. These were indicated by the movement of rings of light up and down the turbines communicating the ecological pulse of the festival to the surrounding region.

Acid Rain

Nigerian artist Ugochukwu Eke‘s work ACID RAIN, produced for the RETHINK exhibition in Copenhagen 2009, consists of 6,000 hanging plastic bags. They sparkle, grey, clear and black, like Christmas decorations, but they contain carbon dust – currently choking the inhabitants of the delta region of Nigeria, an area of massive oil exploration. His work focuses on complete disregard for the environment by authorities and individuals.

Penguin Suicides

Taiwanese artist Vincent J.F Huang installed Penguin Suicides underneath the Millenium Bridge in London in March 2010 with a letter from ‘Penguins Representative Bureau of London’ appearing on his website to explain the creatures’ act of protest and personal sacrifice in the name of global warming awareness raising. The plight of animals in the North and South poles is poignantly represented by this work, which attracted much attention.

Dark Sky

Tiffany Holmes’ installation Dark Sky juxtaposes a table of lamps that can be turned on and off by visitors of the gallery with an animation of fireflies on a black screen. The flow of electricity from the collection of lamps determines the activity of the fireflies. When all the lights are on the fireflies are still, when all off they are numerous and in flight – and everything in between. A poetic way of visualising the impact of our energy use on the environment.

Handcar: On the Grid

Maria Michails is a Canadian artist working at the intersect of ecology, technology and society. Her Handcar Projects are interactive works that employ the dynamism and historical context of the handcar to literally take the viewer on a journey to explore themes such as energy, industrial processes and mining. Through activating the human powered handcar (and in another project a rowing machine) the installations provide a direct relationship between energy consumption and expenditure. In On the Grid (pictured), the work examines the conflicts between competing uses of land for energy, housing and food.

Ten Trenches

Ten Trenches, by Michael and Tim Cohen

Ten Trenches was a collaboration between the Australian brothers Michael and Tim Cohen, one an artist the other a climate scientist. The work explored the archaeological and geological history of the property of the Bundanon Trust –  the Arthur Boyd Estate in Bundanon, NSW – in relation to sea level rise. Were sea levels higher in the past? Would they be in the future in a climate changed world? How did and how would society respond and adapt. A series of sound and image performances and installations by artists generated conversation with the scientific work and discovery of the dig in a unique multi-disciplinary interaction.

Air-Port City

Argentinian artist Tomas Saraceno‘s work speaks to us of an alternative way of living, through the creation of self-contained ecosystems that invite us to live in floating worlds or bubbles, free from borders and free from a potentially polluted world. He approaches the subject of climate change from the viewpoint of an architect offering a Utopic vision, one which is both inviting and frightening if we consider that we might need to create alternative worlds if we continue to allow the earth to degrade. Saraceno’s work also poetically emphasises the links between all living things through the intricate and complex web that his own creations exhibit.

Solar Equation

This stunning digital, sculptural work by artists Rafael Lozano-Hemmer was commissioned by Federation Square in Melbourne, Australia for the 2010 Light in Winter festival. Five projectors animated the world’s largest spherical balloon, depicting live mathematic equations representing real activity on the sun, using new advances in astronomy. As well as raising questions around global warming, the work created a poetic space, evoking mythologies of the sun prevalent in many cultures.

The Silent Evolution

The Silent Evolution is a permanent underwater installation of 400 life-size sculptures off the coast of Cancun, Mexico. Artist Jason de Caires Taylor‘s work is both functional and poetic – the sculptures, taken from casts of people of all walks of life, also function as artificial reefs thereby contributing to the restoration of the environment. With reef systems set to disappear with the advent of climate change, these works present an optimistic and thoughtful response. Visitors to the installation can swim between the sculptures and experience the unique play of light and perspective that come from an underwater setting. Over time the work will change with the ocean environment in a silent evolution of materials responding to natural forces.

Distracted

Distracted, a poetic interpretation of scientific ice core samples taken in Antarctica, is the work of Brisbane-based art, design, and media production collective Kuuki. An installation of acrylic tubes housing LEDs, resin bubbles, found organic matter and sensors, Distracted is an evocative and interactive experience, evoking ice, fluids and the notion of change. A number of data sets are used to create the abstract visualisation and sonification in the work, creating a unique context for understanding human presence and impact on the planet.
